SAINT
GUNSHOT SURVIVOR — STILL FIGHTING
A SURVIVOR AGAINST THE ODDS
Saint, an American bulldog, arrived at the Miami-Dade Animal Services shelter after surviving an unimaginable act of violence. Two bullets were lodged in his head.
Veterinarian Paula Ferreira, whose clinic is located in West Miami-Dade County, examined Saint and found one bullet farther forward in his nasal and sinus area and another farther back in his head. The examination also revealed a single bullet wound, leading Dr. Ferreira to believe the gun may have been held directly against Saint’s head.
Despite what he had endured, Saint remained gentle.
“I thought that he would be aggressive or crazy but he was completely angel,” said Claudia Gonzalez, a volunteer with Humans and Animals United.
Saint’s injuries required advanced medical care. Dr. Ferreira determined that he would need a costly CT scan and surgery to determine how the bullets could safely be removed.
HAAU STEPS FORWARD
On July 8, 2022, Rosa shared an update on Saint’s journey. Saint had received his CT scan at Ferreira Animal Clinic through Mobile Pet Imaging and was recovering from the procedure.
Because the scan required injectable contrast, Saint was receiving IV fluids afterward. The doctor performing the scan was optimistic that the bullets could be retrieved, while HAAU awaited the radiologist’s full report.
HAAU continued asking supporters to donate and share Saint’s story to help fund his care.
