HANK
LEFT IN THE WOODS — WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO NOTICE
LEFT ALONE IN THE WOODS
Hank was only eight months old when a Good Samaritan found him alone in the woods. He was lying quietly on a discarded dog bed, surrounded by his old toys and a sealed bag of dog food he could not even open.
He didn’t run when someone approached. He didn’t fight. He simply stayed where he was, as though he had been waiting for someone to notice him.
What rescuers initially feared might be a frightened or aggressive dog turned out to be something very different. Hank was gentle and affectionate from the moment he was rescued. Rosa Fond, founder of Humans and Animals United, described him as “nothing but love.”
But Hank’s situation was even more serious than it first appeared.
A veterinary examination revealed that Hank had been suffering from a broken leg for more than two weeks. The injury was so painful that he had simply remained on his bed in the woods, unable to move.
HAAU STEPS FORWARD
Hank needed extensive surgery to repair his injured leg, and the shelter reached out to Humans and Animals United for help.
HAAU immediately took Hank into its care and arranged for the medical treatment he desperately needed. He was brought to a local veterinary hospital, where he received the care, attention and affection he had been missing.
Before his surgery, Hank needed to gain some weight. While he waited, the veterinary staff gave him something every rescue animal deserves — safety, comfort and plenty of love.
Word quickly spread about Hank, and adoption requests began pouring in. But HAAU knew Hank still had a journey ahead before he would be ready for his forever home.
SAFE AT LAST
For perhaps the first time in his young life, Hank was somewhere he could simply rest and heal.
He was no longer alone in the woods.
He had people caring for him, medical help for his broken leg, and a future that finally looked different from the life he had known before.
As Rosa told The Dodo, Hank was safe now — and he would never be hurt again.
HANK’S JOURNEY CONTINUES
Hank still had a road ahead of him, but he was no longer facing it alone.
